QUEER THERAPY FOR BAME CLIENTS
What does it mean to be queer (LGBTQI) and from a minority community? Do you have to come out? What are the consequences? How can you be happy, gay and be true to your heritage? These are some of the challenges facing LGBTQI clients from the BAME communities.
Therapy can offer you an opportunity to explore what it means for you to be queer and how this can be reconciled with your background and the community you come from. We explore challenging feelings, possibly associated feelings of shame and guilt as well as the undermining thoughts. Should you come out? Or reflecting on your current circumstances would it be more appropriate for you to hold the tension and maintain silence? What are the consequences for you of either choice? I can not give you the answer but by exploring the issue I hope you may gain some more clarity on the best way forward for you. As a sex positive therapist I would support you explore questions around sex, disease including HIV and AIDs may arise and how you can remain safe. What social support networks are available to you and how can you meet like minded people that are supportive and appreciative of you and your sexuality? My hope is that through the sessions you gain some understanding of the place you find yourself in and how you can manage the situation. |
