It isn&rsquo;t always linked to one clear situation, and it doesn&rsquo;t necessarily ease when things are &ldquo;figured out.&rdquo; It can just sit there quietly in the background of daily life &mdash; or sometimes a little more persistently.<br /><br />In the therapy room lately, and in conversations more generally, I&rsquo;ve been noticing how many people are carrying something like this &mdash; a kind of low-level unease, as if the ground is just slightly unsteady beneath them.<br /><br />I find myself wondering if some of this might be connected to the wider world we&rsquo;re living in. There&rsquo;s a lot happening &mdash; conflicts, uncertainty, ongoing instability in different parts of the world. Even if we&rsquo;re not directly affected, or not taking it in consciously, it can still register somewhere in us. News travels quickly, images linger, and sometimes the body takes in more than we realise.<br /><br />As human beings, we tend to look for some sense of safety &mdash; not perfect control, but enough predictability to be able to settle, to connect, to rest. When that sense of predictability is disrupted, whether in obvious or more subtle ways, the nervous system can begin to shift.<br /><br />You might notice your mind becoming busier, trying to anticipate what&rsquo;s coming, or a kind of restlessness that&rsquo;s hard to switch off. For some, it shows up as difficulty relaxing; for others, it might feel more like numbness or disconnection. None of these responses are unusual. They may be ways your system is trying, as best it can, to take care of you.<br /><br />Writers like&nbsp;<a href="https://amzn.eu/d/0boBEMHs" target="_blank">Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score</a>, have helped bring this into wider awareness &mdash; that our bodies often register and hold experience in ways that don&rsquo;t always feel logical or conscious. And perhaps this includes not only our personal histories, but also something of the collective atmosphere we&rsquo;re living in.<br /><br />In my own work, which is informed by psychosynthesis, I tend to hold these experiences in a more holistic way &mdash; not just as something happening in the mind, but as something that includes the body, emotions, and a wider sense of meaning. Often this means gently paying attention to what&rsquo;s happening in the body alongside thoughts and feelings, allowing those responses to be part of the process rather than something to override or move past.<br />&#8203;<br />At the same time, many of us carry a quiet pressure to be okay &mdash; to stay steady, to keep functioning, to not be too affected. And when anxiety shows up, it can be easy to turn it back on ourselves. Why am I feeling like this? Shouldn&rsquo;t I be handling things better? It can feel as though we&rsquo;re the only ones struggling, even when that&rsquo;s rarely the case.<br /><br />Something that can make this kind of anxiety particularly difficult is that it doesn&rsquo;t always come with a clear solution. The sources of it can feel diffuse, hard to locate, or larger than any one of us. There isn&rsquo;t always a single problem to fix, or a certainty we can arrive at. And while it&rsquo;s very natural to try to think our way out of discomfort, this kind of unease doesn&rsquo;t always respond to more thinking.<br />&#8203;<br />Sometimes it can help to begin somewhere simpler, and a bit more immediate.<br />&#8203;<br />If it feels okay, you might take a moment to gently look around the space you&rsquo;re in. Notice a few things you can see, a few sounds you can hear, and perhaps one sensation in your body &mdash; your feet on the ground, or the support of the chair beneath you. There&rsquo;s nothing to get right here. It&rsquo;s just a small way of reminding your system that, in this moment, you&rsquo;re here.<br />You might also find yourself wondering: what feels uncertain in my life right now? And alongside that, is there anything that feels steady enough &mdash; even if it&rsquo;s quite small or easily overlooked? There&rsquo;s no need to force an answer. Sometimes just letting the question be there is enough.<br /><br />If things do feel a little unsteady, the invitation may not be to force them into certainty &mdash; especially when so much, collectively, remains uncertain. It might be something more modest than that: just beginning to notice what&rsquo;s here, and finding small ways to stay in contact with yourself as things move.<br /><br />Not perfectly, and not all at once. Most of the gatherings I&rsquo;ve joined in recent years have had a purpose: a theme, an intention, or a learning arc. I wasn&rsquo;t sure what a &ldquo;no agenda&rdquo; event would offer. Would it be too loose, too unstructured, maybe even dull?<br /><br />And yet, by the end of the weekend, I was surprised at just how much I had received.<br /><br />What emerged was not nothing&mdash;it was everything.<br /><br /><strong>Decompression in Nature</strong><br /><br />The first gift was space to exhale. Walking among orchards, soaking in sunshine, letting the land hold me&mdash;it reminded me how much nature softens the edges of a busy mind. There&rsquo;s a healing that comes when we stop trying to get anywhere. It echoes what Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us in <a href="https://amzn.to/4nPZSBv" target="_blank">Peace Is Every Step</a>&nbsp;: sometimes just walking slowly, breathing fully, is more than enough.<br /><br /><strong>Connection Beyond the Familiar</strong><br /><br />Another gift was community&mdash;not the kind of community built only around shared identities or beliefs, but the kind that stretches us. People had travelled in from across England, and even further afield&mdash;one participant had come all the way from Sophia, Bulgaria. I met people I might never otherwise encounter. They carried different perspectives, different positions, and yet in our conversations I found my own stance questioned, softened, and enriched. As bell hooks writes in <a href="https://amzn.to/3VyDmB1" target="_blank">All About Love</a>, true community requires us to move beyond comfort and into curiosity.<br /><br /><strong>Bonding Through the Everyday</strong><br /><br />It turns out that community isn&rsquo;t just about conversation&mdash;it&rsquo;s about cooking together, washing dishes side by side, laughing over burnt toast. Ordinary tasks became small rituals of belonging.<br /><br /><strong>Embodied Acceptance</strong><br /><br />Another unexpected joy was noticing how body positivity wasn&rsquo;t a concept we spoke about, but something we simply lived. Sunbathing in the orchard, dipping into the jacuzzi, letting bodies of all shapes and sizes simply be&mdash;glorious, imperfect, and unapologetic. To witness and be witnessed in this way felt deliciously freeing. It reminded me of Sonya Renee Taylor&rsquo;s invitation in <a href="https://amzn.to/4nKRtPH" target="_blank">The Body Is Not an Apology</a>: that radical self-love begins with honouring the body as it is, right now.<br /><br /><strong>A Spontaneous Ritual</strong><br /><br />On the night of the black moon, a ritual spontaneously emerged. It wasn&rsquo;t planned, but it was powerful&mdash;an improvised ceremony that left me deeply moved. It reminded me that ritual doesn&rsquo;t need choreography; it needs presence.<br /><br /><strong>From Doing to Being</strong><br /><br />Perhaps the deepest shift was moving from doing to simply being. Without an agenda, something surprising, nourishing, and profoundly human was able to emerge.<br /><br />For this, I feel immense gratitude to my friend&mdash;for holding space for this experiment in openness, and for inviting us into his home and land. Being present to the world, especially a new one, is an act of coming alive. For me, it looked like noticing the graffiti that read &ldquo;Drop Rents Not Bombs&rdquo; scrawled across walls in Wedding, or realising there were no ticket gates at U-Bahn stations&mdash;just a transit system built (mostly) on good will and trust. It felt oddly hopeful. And yet, alongside that hope, the city also revealed harder truths&mdash;like the visible and growing levels of homelessness, especially around Alexanderplatz. I couldn&rsquo;t look away. And maybe that&rsquo;s a good thing.<br /><br />Berlin has this delicious tension between chaos and calm. On hot days, I joined locals swimming in Flughafensee, the cool lake waters a welcome contrast to the summer heat. I&rsquo;d grab a Currywurst after a long day, hands full and satisfied, soaking in the casual deliciousness that Berlin does so well. I found joy in following the rhythms of the city&mdash;not as a tourist ticking boxes, but as someone tuning in.<br /><br /><a href="https://amzn.to/4735UJS" target="_blank">Pico Iyer, in The Art of Stillness</a>, writes about how travel can offer a kind of mirror&mdash;not to escape your life, but to see it differently. That&rsquo;s exactly what Berlin gave me. A month of work emails and video calls, yes, but also of perspective. Of aliveness.<br /><br />Now that I&rsquo;m back, I feel energised in a way that surprises me. The emails are still there. But I feel different. More awake.<br /><br />I&rsquo;m already dreaming about next year&rsquo;s remote working escape. But this year, I&rsquo;ve been thinking about Pride as something else too: a spiritual celebration.<br />&nbsp;<br />What if the glitter, the music, the parades, and the fierce love we witness at Pride events are more than public expressions of identity? What if they're rituals&mdash;powerful, meaningful, and even sacred?<br />&nbsp;<br />Here are some of my thoughts on the spiritual resonances of Pride through five interconnected themes.<br />&nbsp;<br />&nbsp;<br /><strong>Ritual and Celebration</strong><br />&nbsp;<br />Pride as Ritual<br />The parades, the drag performances, the moments of silence for lives lost&mdash;they are all part of a collective choreography. When we march, chant, dance, and drape ourselves in vibrant colours, we&rsquo;re participating in something that&rsquo;s deeply ritualistic. These acts can echo ancient ceremonies that marked liberation, healing, and transformation.<br />&nbsp;<br />Religious Rituals<br />Think of Hindu processions during Navaratri, or Catholic processions during Holy Week. These gatherings carry symbolic meanings, reinforcing identity, belonging, and connection to something larger than the individual. Pride, while secular, mirrors these intentions. It offers what many rituals offer: a communal sense of transcendence.<br />&nbsp;<br /><strong>Community and Belonging</strong><br />&nbsp;<br />Community in Pride<br />For many LGBTQI folks, Pride is a homecoming. It&rsquo;s where we find our chosen family, receive nods of solidarity from strangers, and feel less alone in our journey. There&rsquo;s a spiritual resonance in that sense of unity&mdash;a coming together that many describe as sacred.<br />&nbsp;<br />Community in Faith<br />Religious communities have long been the cornerstone of belonging. They offer ritual, shared language, mutual care. However, for LGBTQI individuals, these spaces can be double-edged&mdash;sometimes deeply affirming, other times sites of exclusion. Still, at their best, both Pride and spiritual communities aim to cultivate connection.<br />&nbsp;<br /><strong>Finding Meaning and Purpose</strong><br />&nbsp;<br />Pride as a Search for Meaning<br />Pride isn&rsquo;t just a party&mdash;it&rsquo;s a public reckoning with history, justice, and identity. We celebrate not only who we are but also the struggles that made this visibility possible. For many, it&rsquo;s a moment of alignment with their deepest truths.<br />&nbsp;<br />Spirituality and Meaning<br />Spirituality, at its core, is about making meaning&mdash;of pain, of joy, of mystery. It invites us into purpose and presence. When we walk in Pride, we may be stepping into a spiritual act: affirming that we are fearfully, wonderfully made.<br />&nbsp;<br /><strong>Affirmation and Acceptance</strong><br />&nbsp;<br />Pride as Affirmation<br />Pride says, &ldquo;You are enough.&rdquo; In a world that often tells LGBTQI people otherwise, that&rsquo;s nothing short of revolutionary. Whether you&rsquo;re out, questioning, or simply witnessing, being part of Pride can be a deeply healing, affirming experience.<br />&nbsp;<br />Faith Traditions and Acceptance<br />While not all religious traditions have embraced LGBTQI identities, there are growing movements within many&mdash;Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, and others&mdash;that seek to fully affirm queer people as spiritual beings.<br />&nbsp;<br /><strong>Challenges and Conflicts</strong><br />&nbsp;<br />Conflicting Beliefs<br />For those of us raised in traditions that condemned our queerness, the spiritual path can feel like walking a tightrope. Can I be gay and spiritual? Can I return to my faith without shame? These are not easy questions, but they are deeply human ones.<br />&nbsp;<br />Need for Inclusive Spaces<br />Thankfully, there is a rising tide of inclusive spiritual spaces&mdash;queer-affirming churches, LGBTQI sanghas, interfaith Pride services&mdash;that are bridging the divide between sexuality and spirituality. These spaces remind us: you don&rsquo;t have to choose.<br />&nbsp;<br />&nbsp;<br />Pride is many things: protest, celebration, memory, future. But it is also, for many of us, a sacred time. A time to remember who we are, whose shoulders we stand on, and what kind of world we want to create.<br />&nbsp;<br />Whether you find your spirit in the chanting crowds or in quiet reflection afterward, may this Pride be a ritual of love, of healing, and of radical belonging.<br />&nbsp;<br />Happy Pride.&nbsp;&#127752;&#10024;<br />&nbsp;<br />Below a list of books that I have found helpful. The Sangha is recognised as essential to the path of awakening. No one walks the path alone.<br />It&rsquo;s an invitation to see community not just as a backdrop to our individual lives, but as part of the very structure of our wellbeing.<br /><br /><strong>Psychology and the Need for Belonging</strong><br />From a psychological standpoint, community matters just as much. Numerous studies have shown that social isolation is as detrimental to health as smoking or obesity. As psychiatrist <em><a href="https://amzn.eu/d/6bMlk3b" target="_blank"><font color="#8d2424">Bessel van der Kolk notes in The Body Keeps the Score</font></a></em>, trauma is often healed not only through individual therapy but through restorative relational experiences.<br />Even more poignantly, research by <em><a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1745691614568352" target="_blank"><font color="#8d2424">Julianne Holt-Lunstad and colleagues</font></a></em> has shown that loneliness and weak social networks are strongly linked to increased mortality risk (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2015). While psychosynthesis focuses on the integration of the whole self&mdash;body, feelings, mind, soul&mdash;it does not isolate the individual from the wider human field. Community, in this view, is not just a container for our healing&mdash;it is a mirror, a teacher, and a crucible for transformation.<br /><br /><strong>Cultural Wisdom: When the Community Is Unwell</strong><br />In many Indigenous and non-Western traditions, mental illness is not seen purely as a problem within the individual but as a symptom of something off-kilter within the community. For instance, in certain Indian and Indian-American spiritual frameworks, mental distress is often interpreted relationally&mdash;linked to disharmony in family, ancestral, or social relationships.<br /><br />In <a href="https://amzn.eu/d/eR8HTM7" target="_blank"><em><font color="#8d2424">A.K. Similarly, anthropologist <a href="https://amzn.eu/d/gX1i2si" target="_blank"><em><font color="#8d2424">Sudhir Kakar</font></em>,</a> in works like Shamans, Mystics, and Doctors, explores how Indian healers often see psychological symptoms as disruptions in the communal or spiritual field.<br />What if, instead of only asking "what's wrong with this person?", we also asked: "What might this suffering be saying about the community they are part of?"<br /><br /><strong>An Invitation to Reflect on Our Own Communities</strong><br />In the UK today, 1 in 4 adults report experiencing mental health issues, according to the latest NHS data. While part of this can be attributed to greater awareness and diagnosis, it's also worth asking&mdash;what kind of society are we living in where so many are struggling?<br />Our communities are often fragmented&mdash;split along political, racial, economic, and ideological lines. Social media and the pressures of late capitalism can leave us feeling simultaneously overstimulated and alone. For many, particularly those on the margins&mdash;including queer, trans, and racialised individuals&mdash;the experience of community can be mixed, even painful.<br />So perhaps this Mental Health Awareness Week is more than just a call to check in with each other. It is also an invitation to ask harder questions:<br />&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;What kinds of communities are we building?<br />&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Who is left out or pushed to the edges?<br />&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;How can we participate in communities that nourish, include, and liberate?<br /><br /><strong>The Way Forward: Healing Through Connection</strong><br />The theme of &lsquo;Community&rsquo; reminds us that mental health isn&rsquo;t just personal&mdash;it&rsquo;s political, cultural, and spiritual. And while the work of healing begins within, it must ripple outward. We need safe spaces to be witnessed, held, and celebrated. It is a dynamic, nuanced energy that helps us align our actions with deeper meaning and values. Labour, in this view, becomes more than economic output&mdash;it is a spiritual expression of our ability to choose, to act, and to care.<br />From a Tantric or Hindu spiritual perspective, we might understand this as an expression of Shakti&mdash;the primordial creative energy, often described as the divine feminine. Shakti moves through the world as action, change, and life-force&mdash;always dynamic, always potent.<br /><br />The Three Types of Will in Psychosynthesis<br />Assagioli proposed that the will has several qualities and expressions, but for simplicity, let&rsquo;s consider three broad types of will:<br />1.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;No Will &ndash; This is a state of apathy or disconnection, where we feel unable or unwilling to act. Sometimes this emerges from trauma, burnout, or deep disillusionment.<br />2.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Strong Will &ndash; Here, the will is active and focused, able to get things done and push through obstacles. While this can be admirable, it may lack sensitivity or alignment with ethical or relational values.<br />3.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Good Will &ndash; This is the most balanced and evolved form of will. It is strong, yes, but also loving. Good will integrates purpose with compassion&mdash;it seeks to serve not just the self, but the collective and the planet.<br /><br />Assagioli explores this deeply in his book <a href="https://amzn.eu/d/eAmr2CT" target="_blank"><font color="#da4444">The Act of Will</font></a>, which I highly recommend if you're curious about developing a more holistic and conscious approach to willpower.<br /><br />Where Are We Now?<br />Looking around the world today, I wonder&mdash;might we be facing an imbalance in these expressions of will?<br />On one hand, many of us may feel overwhelmed by crises&mdash;climate, war, inequality&mdash;and fall into a kind of psychic fatigue, a state of "no will." On the other, we see systems driven by an excess of "strong will"&mdash;where speed, dominance, and unchecked productivity are prized, often at the cost of care. Think of corporate mantras like "<a href="https://amzn.eu/d/2M24jbi" target="_blank"><font color="#da4444">move fast and break things</font></a>"&mdash;a phrase that valorises disruption without always considering its impact.<br /><br />This is why, as we honour Labour Day, it feels more important than ever to contemplate how we can cultivate and practice good will&mdash;in ourselves, our work, and our communities.<br />As we enjoy our upcoming holiday&mdash;perhaps with a bit of sun, rest, or quiet&mdash;I humbly offer a small inquiry:<br /><em>What would it look like to labour in this world with more kindness, more consciousness, more good will?</em><br />Might we approach our efforts&mdash;not only in our jobs, but in our homes, our relationships, our activism&mdash;with both strength and love?<br />&#8203;<br />Perhaps this May Day, we can plant a small seed of this intention within ourselves: to live and work in a way that honours not only our capacities, but our compassion. If we can hold a psycho-spiritual lens and see the other not as a threat but as a divine being on their own journey toward inner synthesis, perhaps this awareness can lead us to meet each other with profound respect.<br /><br />Surely respect is the soil in which safety grows. There is a dominant narrative that paints global trade as inherently beneficial&mdash;one that promises growth, prosperity, and mutual development. And to be fair, global trade has lifted millions out of poverty and connected countries in ways never before imagined.<br /><br />Yet, if one were to do even a cursory search online, a different picture begins to emerge. Critiques abound&mdash;some of them deeply troubling. Scholars and activists alike have pointed out the darker side of global trade: labour exploitation, especially in developing countries where cheap labour often means unsafe working conditions, long hours, and dismal wages. The term sweatshop is not a relic of the past&mdash;it&rsquo;s a lived reality for many today <em><font color="#2a2a2a">(<a href="https://www.wto.org/" target="_blank">WTO, 2000</a>; <a href="https://www.ilo.org/topics-and-sectors/forced-labour-modern-slavery-and-trafficking-persons" target="_blank">International Labour Organisation</a></font></em>).&nbsp;Additionally, the environmental degradation resulting from mass production and unchecked consumption patterns can no longer be ignored <em><font color="#2a2a2a">(<a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/">WWF, 2023</a>).</font></em><br /><br />With this context in mind, Trump&rsquo;s imposition of tariffs, though politically controversial and economically disruptive, can be seen through a different lens&mdash;not merely as an act of aggression or protectionism, but perhaps as an expression of the archetype of the Trickster.<br /><br />In mythology and Jungian psychology, the Trickster figure is not merely a joker or chaos-maker. Rather, the Trickster is one who disrupts norms, mocks the status quo, and forces the collective to wake up. They stir the pot&mdash;not always with grace&mdash;but with the potential to catalyze deep transformation. It reminds us that what may appear chaotic or even destructive on the surface may carry a deeper invitation: to look again, to think critically, and perhaps to imagine new possibilities.<br /><br />No, we may not have all the answers right now. And no, this perspective is not an endorsement of all policies or actions. That&rsquo;s because, whether we like it or not, we live in what&rsquo;s often called a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VUCA" target="_blank"><font color="#da4444">VUCA</font></a> world&mdash;a world that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. This term originally came from the military (Bennis &amp; Nanus, 1985), but it&rsquo;s now used to describe the emotional and psychological landscape we&rsquo;re all trying to navigate.<br /><br />Living in a VUCA world can be deeply unsettling. At times, it can feel frightening or disorienting. But I&rsquo;ve also found it to be full of possibility&mdash;a place where growth, insight, and meaning can emerge from even the most confusing experiences.<br /><br />As a psycho-spiritual therapist, I draw strength from a perspective that blends psychology with spirituality. This isn&rsquo;t about religion&mdash;it&rsquo;s about the deeper layers of our human experience.
